February 23rd, 2021 - Board Meeting

A(n) Board Meeting presented by WBA at Other

Washington Biathlon Association
Board of Directors Meeting
February 23, 2021

The meeting, held by Zoom, was called to order at 7:05 pm. In attendance were President Bob Vallor, Vice President Cory Hoeger, Treasurer Bryn Black, Athletes Representative Kathleen Colvard, Secretary Sibylle Wilbert, and Board Members Matt Gallagher and Brian Palm. Board Members Sabine Arnold and Dave Shaw were unable to attend.
All attending had seen the minutes from the last Board meeting in December. Kathleen moved to accept the minutes. Bob seconded and all agreed.
John (Jack) Androski applied for a new membership. Matt moved to accept the application. Bob seconded and all agreed. Tom Davies renewed his membership.
The Treasurer reported a balance of $2,296.35 in PayPal and $4,897.15 in Savings. Not yet accounted for are approximately $400 in expenses for grooming at the last races in Winthrop.
The last winter competitions were successfully held on February 20 and 21 at the Liberty Bell High School in Winthrop. Overall, the season was short but races were well attended, even with stringent COVID regulations in place. Running WBA races in the Methow was somewhat challenging as the WBA and MVB club have slightly different approaches to conducting races, scoring, and releasing results. The WBA made all efforts to accommodate expectations, but common ground was not always found. The WBA typically uses Excel spreadsheets to tally results, then reviews the data and posts them on its website. The WBA will continue to use Excel spreadsheets, which are built to accommodate all formats. Cory is working on making the templates more user friendly.
The National Guard has a budget to form a biathlon team of approximately 20 athletes and buy the necessary equipment. Staff Sergeant Jack Androski has taken the lead in assembling and developing this team. Bob serves as an advisor on recruiting and ski training, and the WBA is assisting the Guard in identifying a venue for a March/April training camp.
US Biathlon Nationals are being held in West Yellowstone, MT, on March 24 Ė 28, with stringent COVID regulations in place. Several WBA athletes are planning to participate. Bob will also attend to support Washington competitors on the course and in the wax room.
If COVID guidelines permit, the Cascade Shooting Facilities in Ravensdale continues to be interested in hosting WBA races next summer. With Steveís, Joanneís and Brianís help, a move of the WBA container from SPAA to CSF is tentatively planned for April.
The WBA purchased its first four rifles over 20 years ago, but all rifles are in good shape and shooting well. Several rifles need their stocks refinished and the Board is looking for help from members. Bob is working on a solution for replacing lost snow cover plugs. Some harnesses and rifle bags also need work.
Old business:
 Bob will order nametags for new Board members and a vest for Rich Braun. He needs contact information for the nametag vendor.
 Bob will send a letter of invitation to Ian and Antje Harvey as guest speakers at the next WBA biathlon summit.
New business:
 Kathleen suggested that, if we organize races there again, it would be sufficient to rent only one porter potty for competitions at the Liberty Bell High School as there are five more around the corner. All agreed.
 Jim Fletcher suggested that the WBA purchase their own adaptive targets, which are shot at 10 meters with CO2 air rifles, to allow for the participation of adaptive biathletes. The suggestion will be explored further.
 This year, Bob will mail seasonís medals as they could not be awarded in a ceremony due to COVID regulations. Bryn suggested to include some free ski ties and stickers to the packages. Competitors need a minimum of three races to qualify for seasonís points.
The next meeting will be held by Zoom on March 30 at 7:00 PM.
The President adjourned the meeting at 7:42 PM.
