A(n) Board Meeting presented by WBA at Other
Washington Biathlon Association
Board of Directors Meeting
July 27, 2021
The meeting, held by Zoom, was called to order at 6:35 pm. In attendance were President Bob Vallor, Vice President Cory Hoeger, Treasurer Bryn Black, Athletes Representative Kathleen Colvard, Secretary Sibylle Wilbert, and Board Members Sabine Arnold, Matt Gallagher, Brian Palm and Dave Shaw.
All attending had seen the minutes from the last Board meeting in March. Kathleen moved to accept the minutes. Bob seconded and all agreed.
A new membership application was received from Jude Lewis in Portland, Oregon. The Board will review the application. A request for membership renewal was received from Benjamin Dietz.
The Treasurer reported a balance of $349.54 in PayPal and $5,381.61 in the Savings account.
Assuming that COVID restrictions will be more relaxed by the end of 2021, the WBA is planning on hosting a biathlon summit again in November. Bob invited Ian Harvey, a former biathlete and current USA TOKO representative, and his wife Antje, a former East German cross-country skier and German biathlete who medaled at the 1985 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and in biathlon at the 1992 Olympics, as guest speakers. Unfortunately, both are unable to participate. Using SurveyMonkey Bryn will ask for input from the membership on topics for the meeting and other possible guest speakers. One possibility includes inviting Green Racing Project (GRP) biathletes Raleigh Goessling or Kelsey Dickinson as keynote speakers.
The search for a winter venue in Plain is still ongoing. While the terrain in the Swamp Creek area has many favorable features, two heavily used snowmobile trails are running through it. Earl Marcellus’ property in Plain was also under consideration, but sadly Earl died of cancer last winter and future plans for using his property are on hold. Bob will get in touch with Earl’s wife Judy.
Bob and his wife Michelle will be hosting a surprise retirement party for Mike Powers on July 31 at Bob’s home in Plain. Bob will buy drinks and food for a BBQ. WBA members will bring salads and vegetables for the BBQ, as well as extra folding chairs and tables.
The WBA was planning on hosting at least three run and bike race weekends this summer with setup and practice on Saturday and competitions on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Cascade Shooting Facilities (CSF) in Ravensdale were fully booked with make-up events. If a convenient time can be found, a work party will be organized to move the container with our gear from SPAA to CSF. It is too hot in the Methow Valley for most of the summer to race there. In addition, the area has been hit hard by forest fires. Once temperatures and fires recede the possibility of hosting races in Mazama or Winthrop will be revisited. Bob will also get in touch with SPAA to find out whether summer races could be held there again.
Bob completely replaced the old stakes on the trailer with new ones. Some boards on the trailer bed are loose or warped and will also be replaced.
Matt needs a WBA e-mail address. Bryn will take care of it.
The next meeting will be held by Zoom on August 24 at 6:30 PM.
The President adjourned the meeting at 7:11 PM.
