August 24th, 2021 - Board Meeting

A(n) Board Meeting presented by WBA at Other

Recap
Washington Biathlon Association
Board of Directors Meeting
August 24, 2021

The meeting, held by Zoom, was called to order at 6:33 pm. In attendance were President Bob Vallor, Vice President Cory Hoeger, Treasurer Bryn Black, Athletes Representative Kathleen Colvard, Secretary Sibylle Wilbert, and Board Members Sabine Arnold, Matt Gallagher, and Dave Shaw. Board Member Brian Palm was unable to attend.
All attending had seen the minutes from the last Board meeting in July. Bob moved to accept the minutes. Cory seconded and all agreed.
A request for membership renewal was received from Jerry Liu.
The Treasurer reported a balance of $518.96 in PayPal and $4,800.42 in Savings.
Bryn visited the Securité Gun Club, a new indoor shooting range in Woodinville. The club has a large classroom with a big screen TV, a series of 25-yard lanes available for live fire training and a designated range officer on site. It could be a suitable location for this year’s WBA summit. Bryn requested a quote for renting 5 to 6 shooting lanes and the classroom. Bryn will also send a survey to the membership to ask for input on topics for the meeting and possible guest speakers.
Bob and Michele Vallor hosted a surprise retirement party for Mike Powers on July 31 at their home in Plain, which was a great success. Peter Valaas, the Vallors, PVNT and the WBA contributed to the party, and Max Cobb and the Susan G Komen Foundation sent cards that Bryn dropped in the mail for Mike. Leftover food was stored in Bob’s freezer and will be used at a future party.
The WBA has been welcomed back to SPNC for the upcoming winter season. Bob will draft a proposed race schedule and submit to Jon Popovich once he returns to work on September 23. The WBA will offer help with grooming, if needed. With Winter Olympics happening in February, the WBA is expecting an increased interest in the sport of biathlon this winter. Therefore, two novice clinics will be offered, one at the beginning of the season and the second later. Safety clinics will be held by Zoom prior to race weekends.
The search for a winter venue in Plain is still ongoing. Earl Marcellus’ property in Plain was under consideration, but sadly Earl died of cancer last winter. Bob will connect with Earl’s children who inherited the property.
The WBA was planning on hosting at least three run and bike race weekends this summer. Unfortunately, the Cascade Shooting Facilities (CSF) in Ravensdale are fully booked, and the renewed rise in COVID cases is also of concern. The focus for summer races has therefore been shifted to 2022. Bryn will post a notice to the membership that likely no summer races will be held this year.

Old business:
Bryn set up a new WBA e-mail address for Matt.

The Nordic ski area at Snoqualmie is still on their summer break. Matt will reinitiate the conversation with Guy Robertson, the general manager, about the logistics of establishing a venue there as soon as operations start back up.

New business:
Positions for President, Treasurer, Athletes Representative, Board Member 1 and Board Member 3 will be up for election at the end of the year. The nomination period is open and will last until 6:30 pm on September 30, 2021. Bryn will inform the membership of the upcoming elections and the procedures for nominating a candidate.

The next meeting will be held by Zoom on September 21 at 6:30 PM.
The President adjourned the meeting at 7:07 PM.
