A(n) Board Meeting presented by WBA at Private
Washington Biathlon Association
Board of Directors Meeting Minutes
February 12, 2013
The meeting was called to order at 6:37 pm. In attendance were President Bob Vallor, Vice President Jack Whisler, Treasurer Bryn Black, and Secretary Sibylle Wilbert. Athletes' Representative Sean Kato and Board Members Cory Hoeger, Mike Kamansky, Brian Palm, and Dave Shaw attended by phone. Website Manager Greg Daly was not able to attend.
All attending had seen the last meeting's minutes. Bob moved to accept the minutes. Jack seconded and all agreed.
Bryn reported that the club had currently sixty-six members, of which nineteen are life-time members. She had received new membership applications from Thomas Davies and Richard Braun. Bryn moved to accept the applications. Bob seconded, all others agreed. In addition, applications for membership renewal were received from Anthony Braun and Josh Horst.
Bryn proceeded with the treasury report. The checking account held $1,268.12 and the PayPal account $1,917.06. The savings account (aka athletes development fund) stood at $847.49. Bryn reported that she had received written policies for the year from our insurance and the USBA.
The WBA owns nine club rifles, which generally cover the demand for loaner rifles. However, supplementary personal rifles are still sometimes required. While the purchase of an additional rifle is not urgent, a tenth rifle will be needed eventually as the WBA continues to grow. The board will be watching for good deals on Izhmash rifles for sale.
All present were impressed with the new WBA website and Greg's continuing work. Some club members had asked that the race results page show more information. Bob will work with Greg on including additional parameters to this page.
The winter season schedule was discussed. Currently, the North American Biathlon Championships (NorAms) at Whistler, BC, coincide with WBA races #9 and #10 at SPNC scheduled for March 16 and 17. As several racers are interested in competing in the NorAms, Bob proposed to reschedule races #9 and #10 for March 23 and 24. Greg will post the schedule change on the WBA website. Upcoming races #5 (Mass Start) and #6 (Super Sprint) at Liberty Bell High School in Winthrop and races #7 (Sprint) and #8 (Individual) at SPNC will take place as scheduled (February 16/17 and 23/24, respectively). Races #5 and #6 are being held at the Liberty Bell High School in Winthrop. Race #5 is sponsored by the Methow Valley Biathlon club and has a different registration structure than race #6 sponsored by the WBA. Bryn will sort out potential discrepancies if needed. Bob and Sean will talk to Betsy about her preferences for organizing future shared events and possible alternative approaches that might be easier to administer.
The preliminary summer race schedule currently looks as follows:
Races #1 and #2 plus Mountain Bike race #1 - May 18 and 19 at TCSA, Benton City
Newcomer clinic - June 1 at SPAA
Race #3 - June 15 at SPAA
Race #4 (Washington Games VI) - July 20 at SPAA
Race #5 plus Mountain Bike race #2 - August 17 or 31 at Black Diamond Gun Club
Races #6 and #7 plus Mountain Bike race #3 - October 12 and 13 at TCSA, Benton City
For combined running and mountain bike events, entry fees will be the same whether racers choose to run, mountain bike, or do both.
Bob built a cart on wheels that will hold a target and zero rack for practice at SPAA. It needs to be outfitted with a steel back wall to absorb the hits, which is on order. Once assembled and approved for use by SPAA, it can be rolled out by SPAA members and their guests, possibly by the end of February. The target will likely be used on a range with a backstop and not on the former archery range.
Bob found out from VOmax that they changed the fabric of their products to the same as Toko's, which re-opens the door for placing a new order with VOmax. They will send samples of all sizes for us to try, hopefully in time for the next races at SPAA. In addition to several requests for new suits and jackets, Bob also got interest in vests. Greg will post this information on the WBA website to reach additional potential buyers.
Bob is working on applying for a grant from the NRA foundation to buy biathlon shooting mats. The grant would cover the purchase of approximately ten mats, which run at ~$250 a piece. If the grant comes through, the WBA will add funds to buy a few extra mats.
There was no new or old business to discuss.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 12, at 6:30 PM.
Bob adjourned the meeting at 7:30 pm.
6:30pm. Bridge will be provided for those that can't attend in person. Please email a board member for details.
